{"id":663,"date":"2026-06-16T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/roke.cc\/?p=663"},"modified":"2026-06-17T11:56:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:56:06","slug":"dr-patrick-osewe-former-world-bank-the-hospitality-industry-ict-education-and-green-energy-are-the-priority-areas-for-investment-in-kenya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/roke.cc\/en\/dr-patrick-osewe-former-world-bank-the-hospitality-industry-ict-education-and-green-energy-are-the-priority-areas-for-investment-in-kenya\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Patrick Osewe (former World Bank): &#8220;The hospitality industry, ICT, education and green energy are the priority areas for investment in Kenya&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>The Romania\u2013Kenya Chamber of Commerce (ROKECC) organized, at the beginning of May, a webinar dedicated to business opportunities in Kenya for Romanian and European investors, having as a guest Dr. Patrick Osewe, a former World Bank official, with 19 years of experience within the institution.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why it matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya is the regional hub of East Africa: a market with a large and predominantly young population, a stable financial system and a position that transforms it into a natural access point to the entire region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Romanian companies, understanding this market is the first step of an economic agenda that ROKECC is systematically building, through tools of associative commercial diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The sectors with the highest potential<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Osewe reviewed the areas where the demand of the Kenyan market meets the skills of European investors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>agro-industry and food processing \u2013 especially the mechanized processing of agricultural production;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>renewable energy \u2013 solar, wind and geothermal, supported by an ambitious national afforestation program;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ICT and cybersecurity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>manufacturing industry, especially in special economic zones;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transport and logistics \u2013 including major railway projects that will link Nairobi to Kampala and the rest of the region;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthcare \u2013 a sector pulled up by a growing middle class; tourism, hospitality and education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tourism, hospitality and education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked where Romanian investors should look first, Dr. Osewe indicated hospitality, ICT, education and green energy as priorities \u2013 the sector in which Kenya aims to become a regional leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tax incentives and support for investors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya offers an attractive tax incentive regime: reduced corporate tax in special economic zones (SEZ) and zero VAT for export-bound production in export processing zones (EPZ). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KenInvest agency operates as a &#8220;one-stop shop&#8221; for foreign investors, and the process of setting up a company has been simplified, with solid legal protection for investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Osewe a prezentat \u0219i riscurile cu onestitate: fluctua\u021biile valutare, blocajele de infrastructur\u0103 \u0219i fiabilitatea aliment\u0103rii cu energie electric\u0103 r\u0103m\u00e2n provoc\u0103ri reale, pe care guvernul kenyan lucreaz\u0103 s\u0103 le rezolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Business culture: relationships before transactions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A substantial segment of the webinar was dedicated to the Kenyan business culture, which Dr. Osewe described as relational \u2013 close to the Asian model and different from the American-style transactional systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal connections and hierarchy matter, meetings involve multiple levels of introductions and last longer, but Kenyan partners communicate directly and express their opinions openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The trade framework and the bilateral perspective<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the topic of the EU\u2013Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement, Dr. Osewe explained that its application is temporarily suspended due to a challenge pending before the Kenyan courts \u2013 a type of blockage that usually delays implementation by three to six months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given President William Ruto&#8217;s firm commitment to attracting investments, the agreement could become fully operational by the end of 2026 or early 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion also touched upon the recent comprehensive strategic agreement between Kenya and Italy \u2013 covering trade, energy, defense cooperation and administrative training \u2013 cited as a possible model for a future Romania \u2013 Kenya bilateral agreement, in the building of which ROKECC can assume the role of a catalyst. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internally, Kenya remains a stable democracy, with normal political competition ahead of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion agenda also included opportunities in the creative industries \u2013 from film production, following Africa&#8217;s booming model, to documentary projects shot in Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&#8217;s next<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The webinar is part of a series through which ROKECC brings together experts, private companies and institutions from the two countries.
